How I work
I have been a webdesigner since 1998. I design with the end user in mind. I try to make things as simple as possible, but not any simpler. I'm a firm believer in user testing designs early and regularly.
Front end coding
I build pages using HTML(5), CSS(3), Javascript, jQuery. I have experience building sites with Flash and Actionscript 2.
I have a basic knowledge of PHP and MySQL, enough to build Wordpress themes. For back end programming, I prefer to work with other specialists. I coded in template languages such as Smarty and XSLT.
The pages I code are accessible on a variety of platforms, including mobile phones and desktop computers. My pages gracefully degrade in older, less capable browsers. I know most workarounds for the bugs in Internet Explorer 6 en 7 by heart.
I worked for a number of big Dutch companies, including: ABN AMRO bank (the Florius web app), TNT Post (Dutch postal service, I did nearly all front end code for their intranet), Kieskeurig (similar to Epinions.com, I built various components of their site), Consumentenbond (the Dutch "Consumer Reports", I built several of their site's "wizards").
Teamwork
Although I have no problem working alone, I prefer working in a team. Working in teams is usually a great experience for me, as I think it's the best way to learn from others. I have experience using apps like Basecamp, JIRA and Subversion. I keep my files and code clean, maintainable and organised.
Tools
- Pen, pencil, paper and Balsamiq Mockups for sketching and wireframing.
- Photoshop, Fireworks and Illustrator for fleshing out designs.
- I prefer Mac OS X, but know how to use Windows and have experience with nearly all versions since Windows 95. I have some experience using Linux and have a basic knowledge of the Bash command prompt.
Other skills
- I love photography, and know how to operate many different kinds of camera's, such as modern DSLRs, 70ies rangefinders, TLR.
- I'm pretty good at retouching and colour correcting photos.
- In my spare time I record and mix music (multitrack audio, no dj mixing) and have been doing that for more than 10 years. I mainly use Pro Tools but I have experience working in other DAW software.
